Fifty Two Shades of Shay: Working from Home

Posted on 02:47 by Unknown

Today's Shade of Shay is really personal to me...it's about being a work-at-home mom!  I know there are so many of you out there that work from home...whether it be a few hours a week or a few hours a day...you work from home and take care of your little ones as well.  I have friends that are photographers, do clerical work, do in-home therapy, sell a product, make and create products, the list goes on and on.  I actually think this is a growing trend...working while your kiddos are home...so, I'm happy to tell you why I do it, how I do it and how it works for my family.

Believe it or not...Shay used to have a real job.  You know, the kind I had to shower and get dressed for every.single.day.  The kind where I had clients and meetings along with superiors and people I was in charge of.  A grown-up job.  This may or may not surprise you...but I actually sold insurance for 9 years before I had Kensington.  I even had some fancy Life Insurance Specialist title where I traveled around giving speeches to hundreds of people on the importance of life insurance.  Me?  A serious life insurance person.  (I wasn't allowed to wear my short shorts to work...so sad for me.)

Then...I had Kensington and knew I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom.  At that point, I worked for with Andrew at his office.  Andrew is a little...ummm...how shall I put this politely...OCD (that was really polite) about his business.  He totally wanted me to stay home with our new baby...but he didn't trust another human being to do some of the work I did...so, we decided that I would work from home a little every day while taking care of Kensington.  That's how I started in this work-at-home mom thing.

Baby Kensington hanging out in my office while I worked a little.

Now...almost 5 years later, I still do about 30 minutes of insurance work every morning (except on Mondays, then I do over an hour) but I have two other jobs that I do as well.

This is the official name and logo of my business.  I blog, cook, and run a travel agency.  Somehow, the Lord has blessed me and given me the opportunity to take my 3 favorite hobbies (cooking, blogging and traveling) and turn them into an actual business.  I pinch myself every day.

Other than the insurance work I do, I spend 4 to 5 hours, 6 days a week working.  I work for 2 hours in the morning and two to three hours in the afternoon.  The only day I don't work is Saturday (on Sundays, I work before church and then in the afternoon when the kids are napping).

Here's my schedule:
4:20 AM: wake up (it's really not that hard once you get used to it!)
4:22 AM: get a big cup of coffee
4:30 AM to 5:00 AM: insurance stuff
5:00 AM to 7:00 AM blogging and travel agency stuff
1:30 PM to 3:30 PM (or sometimes longer depending on Kensington's nap): blogging and travel agency stuff

And then I'm done for the day!

I don't like to work while my kids are awake...so, I  make sure and maximize the times when they are sleeping.  When they're awake, I want to be engaging with them, playing, learning, outdoor fun...they are only little once, so I don't want to miss a minute of them being awake!

So, I know what you're thinking?  You're thinking I'm crazy and you need to sleep as late as you can in the morning.  I have a few little suggestions...and just try them...you might actually love my little routine.

This last Saturday, I found this sign at a shop in my downtown area...I bought it for my office :).

1. Just try waking up a little earlier than your family.  I wake up 2 hours and 40 minutes before my kids...but you start by waking up just 30 minutes before yours.  It's amazing what you can accomplish during those quiet moments.  If nothing else, it feels good to get your day going before the first little footsteps hit the floor.

Another good thing about waking up a little early?  There are no other distractions.  No one is calling your phone, texting you, updating their Face Book status...the world is quiet...and you can get a lot of stuff done before your day really even starts.

2. Make a "to do " list the night before and stick to it.

I make my list the night before and include every little thing I need to accomplish.  I even write things like make grocery list, pay the bills, bake a cake, call so and so because it's their birthday...I write it all down.  This way, I can just mark things off my list as the day goes on and I don't have to try and remember what I need to do (this works even if you don't work from home...put "do a load of laundry" on there if it helps you get the laundry done).

3. Carve out your own personal space.

I know everyone doesn't have enough room in their house for their own office..but even if all you do is create a plastic bin for your work stuff or a kitchen drawer...make a space that holds everything you need for your job.  This way, you're not scrambling for a calculator because you had it in a community spot and someone walked off with it.  This also helps to keep you really organized and feel less frantic.

4. Say no.

I learned years ago to say no to people.  Or to tell people that I'm a work-at-home mom, so it might take me a bit longer to get back with them.  Don't try and accomplish at home what you would accomplish from an office somewhere...if you have small children running around, you just can't.  Right now, I'm saying no to several opportunities because I really need to give my all to the things I've committed to already and not spread myself too thin.

5. Don't answer the phone when you're working.

My sweet friends know that if they call me during the middle of the day and I don't answer, it's because I'm working.  If I only allow myself two hours to work during the afternoon, then I can't spend 10 minutes of it chatting...I need to focus and get my work done without any distractions.

6. Set boundaries for yourself and work within them.

At first, I found it hard to stop working...since I worked from home, then any time I had a spare 5 minutes, I would return to my work...but that's not good.  I've learned now that I have "working" hours during my day and "non-working" hours.  I used to feel guilty for sitting down for 10 minutes to read a magazine when I knew I could be in my office working...this isn't good!  When Andrew comes home from his office, he gets to leave his computer, phone, files, and everything else up there...and he can just relax at home.  I had to start making myself stop working...just because I was at home didn't mean I had to be working all the time.  I needed to be able to relax in my own home too!

Check out my foodie blog here.

Check out my travel agency here.

So...this is how I work from home.  It's not a perfect method but I'm learning it's the best method for my family.  Some days go smoothly...and some days are crazy...but that's just part of the joy of working from home.

Next week, the Shade of Shay relates back to this post.  It's all about blogging!  And...I have some very, very special people giving advice to me and all of you on how to be the best blogger possible.

DWTS Episode 6 Recap: Wonder-ful Things

Posted on 03:01 by Unknown
It was a Stevie Wonder night on DWTS this week!  And to honer such an occasion, I thought I'd share my Wonder-ful Things!  These are things I'm in love with right now...they're Wonder-ful!

(Sorry...but when you give me the name Wonder for this week's post...I'm going to totally over-use it...brace yourself!)

And yes, the most Wonder-ful thing of all is that Sean wasn't eliminated...we'll get to that...but first...

Sheaffer has mentioned these wedges here,  here and here on her blog recently.  This...

...is an actual picture of my feet that Sheaffer took as we shopped for them at Nordstrom last week.

She called me and said that these were the most comfortable wedges ever made.  Period.  I must buy them. That day.  Hurry.

Being the wedge expert that I am...I was a little skeptical.  I know wedges.  Wedge Queen is my name.  That being said...

...she was EXACTLY RIGHT!  These wedges are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!  I bought them in two colors (taupe and black).  Thanks to the Wonder-ful Sheaffer for being on the lookout for the most perfect wedge of all time.

These are J Crew's 3" Chino Shorts.  In my opinion, they're are the best shorts money can buy.  I'm going to confess something to you...please no hate mail.  I realize what I'm about to say is excessive...but I want to be truthful and honest (and really emphasize how I think they are the best shorts).   I counted...and within the last two seasons, I have purchased 11 pair.  (Again, no hate mail.  I understand that is excessive.  But I wear them every.single.day.)  If you need a new pair of shorts (or 11 pairs), you should check them out.  Like today.

And bonus!

And if you know J Crew (which I do), they don't have sales that often...so when they do, you should stock up.

And finally, my Wonder-ful yellow scarf always gets complimented.  It's light and bright and perfect for spring and summer.  And...

...is 30% off your online purchase.  Even more Wonder-ful, right?!

Ok...so, I had a lot to say about Monday night's show...and then Sean was in the bottom two on Tuesday and I forgot everything.  I'm just thrilled he didn't get kicked off!

The reason I think Sean was in the bottom two...because the wardrobe people sent him out to dance in old man pjs.  I seriously remember my Granddaddy wearing a pair of pajamas that looked exactly like that when I was younger.  Even Kensington (who is only four!) said, "Whoa.  What is he wearing?".

I thought Ali looked fabulous on Monday's show.  It was my favorite Ali performance.

At first, I thought I missed Kellie's beautiful long hair, but after seeing her with the wig on Monday night, I realized that I actually prefer her cute little cut.  (Not dancing related...but a general observation I had.)

I absolutely adore me some Andy Dick...but it's time for him to go.  Who would have ever thought he would have made it 7 episodes?

Zendaya's long fingernails really annoy me.  Just something I've been thinking about for the last 6 weeks...she's such a cute girl...but those nails are not my favorite (cue hate mail from long nail loving people).

My favorite part of the night?  The two group dances!  I really liked both of them and actually thought they deserved higher scores then they received.

Ok...he survived another week (barely!).  It was a Wonder-ful week!

Dinner tonight is a no-brainer!  It's a Chicken Caprese Pizza you can whip up in minutes.

And today is the last day for my Stella & Dot party!  Shop now while you still can!

And for even more DWTS...you must check out DWTS Told Me To!  Sheaffer doesn't just know how to pick out the perfect wedge...she knows her DWTS too!

Love & Marriage Blog Series: Final Thoughts

Posted on 02:52 by Unknown
Today concludes our Love & Marriage Blog Series.  I've had such a wonderful time sharing bits and pieces of my marriage with you!  If you missed the other weeks, click here to see my introduction, click here to see how Andrew and I overcome hard times, and click here to see my advice for keeping my marriage interesting.

It's been a blessing to get to know the other girls in this series.  Megan, Jenn, Jenna, Lindsey and Mandy have been so sweet to work with and truly inspirational.  I hope to do other series with them all in the future!

Today, we're all giving our final thoughts and pieces of advice.  I've been a blog reader for 7 years now.  I feel like I have so many "friends" just by reading complete strangers blogs.  It's amazing how excited and interested I can get about the lives of people I don't know...it's the crazy world of mom blogging.

During this series about love and marriage, I've thought a lot about one of my closest friends.  You see, this wife and mom has it all together.  She's gorgeous, she's sweet as can be, she has a hot husband with a really great job...they drive expensive cars, take lavish vacations, live in a mansion, and she has more designer handbags then I could count...they're Ken and Barbie.  The standard for what a great marriage and family should be.

However, last April, I was at the gym watching TV and using the elliptical machine when my friend walked over to me like always to say hi.  This time, however, instead of hi, she said, "I hate my husband".  I laughed and said, "Yes, sometimes Andrew gets on my nerves too", and she said, "No.  I really hate my husband.  He cheats on me.".

Hello.

Not so Ken and Barbie after all.

How did one of my closest friends have this miserable marriage where the husband was unfaithful and I didn't know?  For years this had been going on in her marriage.  For years.  And she and I talked about our marriages all the time.

Why did I mention my Barbie friend?  Because you really and truly just never know what's going on inside someone else's marriage.

I get a lot of email about how women wish their hubbys were more like their friend's husbands...how their husbands have changed...how they have changed...how it's hard now...how it's not fun anymore...how they're unhappy...blah, blah, blah.

Everyone thinks the grass is greener on the other side...but you know the old adage...the grass is greenest where you water it.

I think as blog readers (which you all are...or you wouldn't be reading this!), we have to realize that yes, most blogging ladies seem fabulous and honest...but the truth is, we have absolutely no idea what is really going on in their marriages.  None.  We have to stop focusing on how happy and content others look and instead try and make our marriages the best they can be.

If you would have asked me 13 months ago, whose life I would have thought was the most carefree, wonderful and blissful, I would have said Barbie's.  I had absolutely no idea she was actually living in her own personal hell...you just never know.

Marriage is hard...marriage takes a lot of work...but it is also the best partnership God gives us here on earth.  Work hard on your marriage!  And water it.

And just as a sidebar: I asked Barbie if I could discuss her situation without mentioning her name or giving direct clues to who she is...and she said she would prefer if I used both of their real names, maybe linked to her ex-husband's business website and possibly put his cell phone number out there.  Ha!  Just in case any mad blog readers wanted to give him a piece of their minds.  I was tempted...but I refrained.

Don't worry about sweet Barbie.  She is in such a good place right now.  It was a really rough year, but she is no longer married to cheater liar adulterer Ken (because it's hard to be married to someone who wants to sleep with other women on a regular basis) and is enjoying her life with her kids.

Thank you for coming back every Wednesday this month to read about my marriage to this guy...

...without 9 years of marriage to him, I wouldn't have had much to say.  Focus on your marriage.  Make it a priority in your life.  Work hard at making your marriage the best it can be.  Don't hold grudges.  Be a team. Pray for your marriage.  If you do all of this...it can only strengthen your marriage.

What's on the foodie blog today?  Yummy Lemon Neiman Marcus Bars!

And if you missed it yesterday, click here to see my easy guide to swimsuit shopping!

Finally, my Stella & Dot party ends Friday.  You'll fall in love with the jewelry, bags and more!  Click here to shop!

Thanks for being a part of this wonderful series!  Have a blessed day!

Fifty Two Shades of Shay: Swimsuit Shopping

Posted on 02:30 by Unknown

Everyone breathe!  Don't panic...put down the paper sack.  It's going to be ok.  I promise!

(I guarantee you Sheaffer has left her computer and hopped on her stationary bike at this point...)

Last week, I told you about my fitness routine, so it's only natural that I transition into swimsuits...it is a Shade of Shay after all...I do buy swimsuits every year and wear them on a regular basis during the summer. (Let's face it...I wear them all day, every day during the summer...it's Texas down here!  Unless you're inside in the A/C, you better be in the pool!).

No matter how you feel or what kind of shape you're in, there is a swimsuit for you!  None of us are super models (well...my friend Jeni is pretty darn close...but I try not to hold it against her...), so just relax and remember that it's more about finding a flattering cut than picking a small size.  First, I have some tips, then I have some examples...

Tips for Swimsuit Shopping

1. Shop alone.
I love shopping with my mom and my friends...but I want to shop for swimsuits alone.  First, I don't want to leave the dressing room (or even open the dressing room door) to model a swimsuit.  I want privacy and a small space to analyze things.  Plus...I don't want their opinions.  I don't care how great they say I look in a suit, if I don't feel great, I shouldn't buy it.  Swimsuit shopping can be frustrating too...so why would I want to share that with a friend???  Shop alone...and if you really need an opinion,  text a photo of yourself to a trusted friend for their opinion...but I don't recommend you bringing them along.

2. Faux tan before you go.
My legs after the long months of fall and winter are blinding white!  When spring comes and I pop into a dressing room to try on a suit, all I see are my white (winter looking) legs and arms.  Now, I use self-tanner to help make me feel a little more summery as I'm trying on suits.  Trust me...a little color will make all of the swimsuit options look a little better...and you feel better about yourself.

3. Wear easy clothes.
There is only one thing worse than trying on swimsuits...that's trying on swimsuits when you're wearing layers, boots, socks, a jacket and lots of jewelry (a.k.a. me on a regular basis).  When I know that I'm going to be trying on anything (especially swimsuits), I wear clothes that are easy off and on (and I don't wear boots!).  Don't you see...I'm trying to keep myself in the best mood possible...cranky people don't have fun swimsuit shopping!

4. Buy a smaller bottom.
Here's the thing...I read this last year in a magazine, and now I think about it all the time when I see people in their swimsuits (yes friends, I'm looking at your butt).  Most people buy up a size for the bottom part of their swimsuit thinking it will give them more coverage, however, what usually happens is that the suit sags in the back making your backside look droopy and bigger.  Swimsuits sag for several reasons...they sag when they get wet, they sag when they stretch out and get older, they sag as a result of washing them too frequently...the bottom line (pun intended) is that if your suit fits a little more snug on the bottom, it will make your backside look smaller and firmer.  Don't believe me?  Look around this summer!  You'll start to notice it too!

5. Buy expensive, buy cheap...it doesn't matter.
I have a wide variety of swimsuits...some are pricey and many are not.  I bought 3 last year that were $4 a piece (which is why I bought three!).  I personally think you get what you pay for in the swimsuit department.  A suit you pay $80 on will last you a decade (with proper hand washing), so take great care of it...it will be with you a long time.  My $4 suits probably won't last me another season, but that's ok too!  I only paid $4...it's not a huge loss.  Just know what you're buying and set the standard appropriately.  Don't expect your $4 suits to last years and don't treat your $80 suits like they're cheap.

6. Embrace yourself!
Repeat after me...I am not a supermodel (Jeni, you don't repeat).  You're not Heidi Klum, so don't expect to look like her.  You're a normal gal with a body the Lord gave you...embrace it!  Confidence is the number one thing that makes you look fab in a swimsuit!  Be confident!  Who cares if you have stretch marks, dimples, cellulite, whatever...you're only getting older...in a few years, you'll look back and think, "why didn't I embrace that body then...I'm even older now!".  Hold your head up high and work that swimsuit!

The Swimsuits

Athleta is one of my favorite places to get swimwear.  They make real swimsuits for real women.  They also make their suits out of the most durable, shrink and fade resistant material.  This suit here comes in a tankini, bikini, shorts and not-so-string bottoms.  You can buy several pieces and mix and match them with their solids too.  I highly recommend Athleta!

And who says one pieces suits have to be boring?  This suit is super smokin' and it's a one piece!

And so is this one!  One piece suits don't have to be boring!

How fun is this bikini by Gap?!  You have two bottom choices with this one...one with more coverage and one with a little less.  Such a fun color combo for summer!

And there is no better bargain in swimwear than Old Navy!  Look how cute this suit is?!?!  Old Navy has a wide variety for every shape and size...such a good collection of suits!

What if you need a coverup?  I have a few of those too!

I bought this cover-up several years ago in three colors and continue to wear it again and again.  It's easy to get on and off and looks cute with just a pair of wedges or flip flops after you're done swimming.

This cover-up would look so cute thrown over any suit!  It comes in so many fun colors too!

And this one just oozes summer!  Love!

One last thing...what would a swimsuit post be without me talking about my favorite Shade of Shay...my shades.

I am an aviator girl.  If I'm outdoors, I have my aviators on :).

My husband jokes that I keep 10 pair in my car.  I counted the other day.  There were eight.  I have these and love them because they're super cute and really inexpensive!

I hope this Shade of Shay encouraged you to go swimsuit shopping!  Hold your head up high, grab your confidence and don't take a friend...and pick out a suit, cover-up and sunglasses you feel proud in!  Love you all!

Next week...the Shade of Shay is being a work-at-home mom!   I'm excited to share with you what my work-life looks like.

Don't forget, click here for my Stella & Dot party...it ends Friday!

And here's a salad to go with your swimsuit shopping...

...don't worry!  The broccoli in the salad totally outweighs the bacon (girl math!).

Click here for the other Shades of Shay.
